Troubleshooting printer problems is best handled in two easy steps: first diagnose the problem, then apply likely solutions until the problem is fixed.
The information that you need to diagnose and solve most common problems is provided by online problem solving, the printer's control panel, the EPSON Status Monitor utility, or by running a printer operation check.

A red/amber light on the printer always indicates an error of some kind that will prevent the printer from functioning. Examples of error lights are shown below:
Example of a printer with a Maintenance button
Example of a printer with separate ink and paper buttons
In Windows, Status Monitor can be accessed via the Utility, or for some printers, the Maintenance section of the driver. In Mac OS X it can be accessed via /Applications/Epson Printer Utility. For help on accessing Status Monitor, refer to one of the articles below:
In Windows, EPSON Status Monitor 3 provides the following information:
Status Monitor should communicate with the printer and report the printer's current status. Follow the recommended action provided by Status Monitor to clear the error. Refer to your user guide if you need help with the advice. The following articles may also help:
If Status Monitor reports a "Communication Error", continue following this guide to attempt to clear the error. Once the error is cleared i.e. the red/amber error light is no longer present, refer to one of the following articles if this error continues to be reported and you are unable to print:
If Status Monitor is greyed-out, see the relevant Knowledge Base articles:
Some printers are connected by a USB cable. The cable still needs to be disconnected.

If the green power light is off and the red/amber Maintenance light is on then this indicates a carriage error.
Whether ink is low or out you can check which cartridge(s) are low or empty by pressing the Maintenance button. The ink cartridge holder will move to the left of the printer and position itself under a mark in the plastic or plastic arrow which is the indicator.
If the green power light is off and the red/amber Maintenance light is on or flashing then this indicates a carriage error.
Example of the error light you may see:
Paper jam or mis-feed.
One or more ink cartridge(s) needs replacing.
Example of the error lights you may see on the printer control panel. The lights that appear depend on your printer model and the problem:
If the green power light is off and the red/amber Maintenance or Ink and Paper buttons are flashing then this indicates a carriage error.
If your printer has a pair of alternate flashing lights this is usually related to a service call by the printer.
On a two button printer the green and red/amber maintenance lights flash alternately. On a three button printer the green light is off and the ink and paper lights flash alternately.
Like so many other products, Epson consumer inkjet products have a finite life span due to component wear during normal use. At some point the product will reach a condition where either satisfactory print quality cannot be maintained or components have reached the end of their usable life.
This is normal operation for a sophisticated mechanical device. See Error message "Parts inside the printer have reached the end of their service life" for more information.
